The Dominican Republic has over 1,500 km of coastline and some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. Whether you want pristine white sand, dramatic cliffs, or hidden coves, this guide covers our 7 favorites — including the lesser-known ones most tourists miss.
1. Bávaro Beach — The Iconic Postcard
Bávaro is the most famous beach in Punta Cana, and for good reason: 25 km of fine white sand, turquoise water, and rows of palm trees. It is lined with all-inclusive resorts but you can access free public sections such as Playa Macao and Playa El Cortecito.
Best for: first-time visitors, families, water sports lovers.
Tip: visit early morning to avoid crowds and enjoy calm water.
2. Playa Juanillo (Cap Cana) — Luxury & Calm
Located in the exclusive Cap Cana area, Juanillo is a quieter alternative to Bávaro with crystal-clear shallow water and fewer vendors. Perfect for swimming and relaxing in a refined setting.
Best for: couples, calm-water lovers, photographers.
3. Playa Macao — Surf & Local Vibe
About 30 minutes north of Bávaro, Macao is famous for its golden sand, dramatic waves, and rustic local restaurants serving fresh fish. It is also the only beach in Punta Cana with consistent surf.
Best for: surfers, food lovers, escape-the-resort experience.
4. Playa Ermitaño — A Hidden Paradise
Far from the tourist crowds, Playa Ermitaño in Samaná is a virgin beach reachable only by boat or 4×4. Untouched white sand, turquoise water, and lush green hills — it feels like a movie set.
Best for: adventurers, photographers, true escape from civilization.
👉 Visit Ermitaño on our 3-Beaches Excursion — we also stop at Playa Morón and Playa Onda.
5. Playa Los Gringos (Nagua) — Where River Meets Sea
An extraordinary spot where the Boba River flows into the Caribbean Sea. The result is a unique freshwater pool surrounded by a saltwater beach. Locals love it; tourists rarely find it.
Best for: swimming, kids, off-the-beaten-path travelers.
👉 We stop here on our Laguna DuDu Day Trip.
6. Playa El Diamante — Picture-Perfect Calm
Like a natural swimming pool, El Diamante in the Dominican north coast is shallow, calm, and surrounded by palm trees. The water is so clear you can see your toes 3 meters below.
Best for: kids, snorkelers, photographers.
7. Bayahibe Beach — Gateway to Saona Island
Bayahibe is a charming fishing village on the southeast coast with a postcard-perfect beach. From here, you can take boat trips to Saona Island, one of the most photographed beaches in the world.
Best for: day-trippers, divers (great reefs nearby), couples.
How to Get to These Beaches
Most all-inclusive resorts only show you Bávaro. To experience the real beach diversity, you have three options:
- Rent a car: independence but you will need GPS, sunblock, and a local SIM
- Public transport: cheap but slow — only for adventurous travelers
- Guided tour with local company: most travelers prefer this for safety and convenience
At TourGuide.do we operate small-group tours to all the hidden beaches with hotel pickup included, certified bilingual guides, and free cancellation up to 24h.
What to Bring
